Mimes of Wine was founded in 2007 by singer and pianist Laura Loriga, born in Bologna, Italy, and now active and based between her city and New York. The band has released three full lenght albums in recent years – Apocalypse sets in – Midfinger Records/Warner Chappell, 2009 – Memories for the Unseen – Urtovox Records,2012 – La Maison Verte 2016, plus two EPs. Since the second record, Laura has started working with a stable line-up, composed by Stefano Michelotti (nychelharpa, accordion, dan-bau, and more), Matteo Zucconi (double-bass, electronics), Luca Guglielmino (guitar), Riccardo Frisari (drums). After a year and a half long tour in Italy and America (2013-2014) and some time in the studio, the third record of the band, La Maison Verte, was released by Accidental Muzik (Adam Moseley) in the US, in June 2016. The US release (promoted by Noisy Ghost and Planetary Group) is currently being followed by a European release (and tour) with Urtovox Records and Locusta Booking.
Mimes of Wine started as the solo project of singer and pianist Laura Loriga in 2007. The songs that are part
of her first album, “Apocalypse Sets In” (2009), were written and recorded in the following
three years, inspired by the cities where she lived during that period (Bologna, Italy, where she grew up, Paris,
San Francisco, and Los Angeles) and by the people she collaborated with.
The bones of all songs were composed with piano and voice, and enriched by other sounds (bells, cymbalon,
guitars, drums, a shruti box, noises, and more).
Between 2007 and 2009, Laura performed almost exclusively in California, accompanied by a viola (Neel Hammond), a stand up bass (Kenny Annis), and drums (Drew Pearson).
In Italy, her music (on records and live) was enriched by the work of drummer and producer Enzo Cimino,
whom Laura co-produced her first album with, and by more
musicians like Adriano Modica (guitar, bass), Tiziano Bianchi (trumpet), Francesco Begnoni (guitar), Zeus Ferrari (drums).
After the release of the first record (Midfinger Records/Warner Chappell),
Mimes of Wine’s first tour brought the band around Italy, Belgium and Germany, up until March 2011.
Among others, they performed with: Josephine Foster, Wintersleep, Egle Sommacal, Ulan Bator, Sara Lov,
Nancy Elisabeth, Niobe, Rie Sinclair, A Toys Orchestra.
Mimes of Wine’s second album, Memories for the Unseen, was written between Los Angeles and Bologna between the
end of 2010 and the beginning of 2012, and it was released in November 2012 in Italy and Europe by Urtovox Records.
The album was recorded by Enzo Cimino at Casa del Vento Studio (Ravenna), and enriched by the contribution of
Tiziano Bianchi (trumpet), Helen Belangie (cello), Penelope Fortier (back up voices), and more (Jonathan Tehel, Luca
Cristofori, Ariane Gaudeaux, Brett and Mitchell Erzinger).
All the songs were mixed and post-produced by Adam Moseley in Los Angeles, and mastered by Peter Lyman at Infrasonic
Sound, Los Angeles.
The out-takes, among which Holy, were arranged and mixed by Giuliano Dottori, in Milan.
The tour for Memories for the Unseen, started after the release, (November 2012) and lasted until March 2014.
Laura has also been collaborating throughout 2013 and 2014 with Giardini di Miro’, as a back-up singer and pianist as well as opening their
shows as a support act (Good Luck, 2012).
